The 7 Best Moments When TV Shows Broke Into Song

Pop quiz, hotshot: how do you make any already good thing even better? By adding music, of course! And TV, that beautifully warm and shiny box all of us currently forego in favor of Netflix on our phones, is no exception. Warning: This musical list may make you want to break out into song in real life, which might cause some unwanted stares at the CVS.

Bob’s Burgers – “Bad Stuff Happens In The Bathroom”

I’m a sucker for a partner song, and this Bob’s Burgers tune perfectly fits the bill. Bob and Louise’s music works by themselves wonderfully, but when they’re sung together, it’s tastier than any pun-based burger you can think of.

Community – “Somewhere Out There”

While Community may have gone on to mount more conceptually ambitious episodes (Multiple timelines, anyone?), this season one convergence of storylines through an Irish rendering of the main theme from An American Tail is the perfect encapsulation of the series’ silliness, emotional and structural complexity, and obsession with pop culture all at once.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – “Pinot Noir”

Look, if you’re gonna hire a Broadway singer as one of your main cast members, you’re gonna make him sing. And when it came time to shine on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Tituss Burgess did not disappoint. Good luck getting this out of your head, dear readers.

Scrubs – “Guy Love”

While the plot mechanics of this medically musical episode are a little hackneyed, it’s worth it for this beautiful ode to the bromance. I have always been jealous of JD and Turk’s ability to openly articulate how much platonic love they feel towards each other; this song is just icing on the cake.

Adventure Time – “Bacon Pancakes”

I’d describe this musical moment from Adventure Time the way I’d describe the bacon pancakes Jake is making: sweet, filling, and to the point.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer – “Mustard”

While the entire Buffy musical episode “Once More, With Feeling” is an iconic piece of television history, my personal favorite song is this brief ode to dry cleaning that’s both hilarious and plot-advancing. Musical curse or not, I believe there are certain victories in life that deserve to be sung operatically about!

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia – “Day Man”

If The Beatles can experiment with LSD to create Sgt. Pepper, who says Charlie can’t experiment with huffing glue to create “Day Man”? While the musical episode inspired by this moment is in of itself a work of genius, I had to give it to the genesis itself, for its spontaneous pleasures and depiction of the Gang actually working together.

Which moment had you tapping your toe? Which moment left you flat? And what did we miss? Also, if you follow me on Twitter, all of my tweets match up perfectly to the melody of “Africa” by Toto. Seriously. Try it.
