A planned Tetris movie will now be a trilogy. The makers say it isn’t a money grab but instead is needed to properly tell the story they have planned.
Producer Larry Kasanoff isn’t saying anything about what that story will actually be, but says the most obvious approach with some form of anthropomorphized blocks is nothing close to what will happen. He told Empire that “We’re not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie. We want the story to be a surprise, but it’s a big science-fiction movie”
The only thing that’s really known about the content of the movies is that they’ll be aimed at a global audience, which means they could be light on dialog. At least part of the shooting is set for China with local actors.
The movie has been in the works for two years and reportedly has a production budget of $80 million. Kasanoff has form on video game to movie productions, having previously worked on the adaptation of Mortal Kombat, the kindest thing about which you can say is that it wasn’t the Street Fighter movie.
